I forgot I took this picture of a really nicely modded GX460. its dark blue so what my kids would call a “boingo” (bingo’s are yellow cars).

Kinja'd!!!

Full Icon stage 2 all around with new control arms but retaining KDSS. I like that they hid a winch in the spindle. slider steps too.

Install front and/or rear lockers and I would choose this over a 4runner 10 out of 10 times.

But why a nice Lexus? Because we don’t get plebe models of the Land Cruiser or more utilitarian trim levels ?

That is super nice! I’m headed down the LC/LX rabbit hole in my never ending “dad” car search this week. Any tips?

I like these but that 4Runner snorkel looks weird on it.

I’d still think a Tahoe makes more sense for 99.9% of people buying these, even those people wheeling them.

I wouldn’t trust a tahoe to half the places this could go.  Not for reliability, for capability.

I know it’s several generations removed, but I can’t agree with you more. At the end, I’d barely trust my Yukon to make it to the gas station, let alone any sort of trail. My ‘96 was two years old when it started to self destruct.

My  sister’s luck with her current Yukon hasn’t been much better.

Sharp looking GX. No rear lights at all, wonder if it’s getting a rear bumper, although that wouldn’t match with the hidden winch aesthetic.

They have small axles for their weight, short trailing arms, long wheelbases, big width and no armor or decent traction control system.  They just aren’t meant for this kind of work.

it looks like they are halfway through an awesome project to relocate the rear bumper cover higher for greater departure angle and havent figured the lights out yet.

Nah. I wish I lived out there because I’d be right behind you in my Silverado. This sort of “work” is nothing for a truck that gets beat on daily by landscapers, 16 year old kids at their first tractor pull , contractors, etc.

Short trailing arms only matters when you start lifting the truck too high, the wheelbase isn’t that long (Suburban has a 3 " longer wheelbase than a DCS B Tacoma, Tahoe’s is 4" longer than a LC200 ), width is NOT a big deal out west except for like 2-3 trails, you don’t need nasty armor unless you’re rock crawling-  front diff and transfer stock skids are more than adequate for most work, you only need to add sliders, and people have been wheeling without traction control for years. A rear locker (again, factory option) is all you need 90% of the time. The other 10%? Strap to your buddy or winch.

I like the tahoe/burb, we’ve owned 4 and I think they are excellent machines...but...they ARE too big and ill equipped for out here. The reason I know? Because I live here and wheel here. I n the 5 years I’ve been doing deep Utah exploration let me count the number of times I’ve seen a domestic full size on a technical trail:

Kinja'd!!!

I’ m not being hyperbolic, I have literally seen zero full size SUV’s in the backcountry. You’ll see ranch trucks all day long on the easier trails and roads...makes sense they are usually their roads...but as soon as you have to pass a gatekeeper they disappear . Now can you see a lot of the west in something like that? A TON. trouble is you can be 40 miles into a trail and you will need more capability or less truck to proceed. So yeah, 90% is a good number for trails a tahoe could do, but the 10% will restrict you from about half of the routes I do. I don’t mean to make light, but I promise your truck or even a lifted tahoe would not have made it into arch canyon with us on this last trip. Granted we were repelled as well, but even before we got there to find that out a full size would need to have been parked.

Great vehicles for covering rough miles and even many trails, but they are limited out here.

Granted I’ve only wheeled out west once, but you’ve never done anything on the east coast where size actually is a limiting factor. I’ve never wheeled anything this big before, but I’d say the trails I did in Vermont the other weekend would be around a 5 on the west coast scale and it got the job done. Out of the two times I needed a strap, one was to prevent possible body damage and the other was because I wedged a log between my axle tube and shock mount. It’s slower, it takes more spotting, but I was impressed. Having good tires and 300 hp (it was wet) helps. Out west Super Dutys, Power Wagons, Raptors and even a H2 have all done the squeeze on Elephant Hill, where else is size a problem?

Just because you don’t see any doesn’t mean they won’t do it. How many people were wheeling GXs 5 years ago? Full size invasion was 5-6 trucks when it started. I mean, a Crown Vic can do Hell’s Revenge. Until I see someone try it and fail, it’s possible. Don’t get me wrong, the LC100 is one of my favorite vehicles of all time, but the cost is completely unjustifiable (IMHO) if you aren’t doing real wheeling all of the time. One day I hope I can make a believer out of you, but until then keep the rubber side down my dude.

I feel like “i know you live there and go out in the backcountry all the time but I visited once so I know you’re wrong” isn’t a great leg to stand on. Give me some credit man.

Here is a good example taken from the Charles Wells Moab guidebook, kinda the gold standard for the area.

Kinja'd!!!

Granted this was never going to happen with a stock vehicle this size , but I’ve done this trail and I can say with absolute confidence that there is no way he would have made it without a 4 inch lift and 35's. At that point you are looking at new trailing arms, a front diff drop and a new rear axle as that 10 bolt 8.5 semi float will pop with 35's. Same goes for the new model and doubly so with the G80. Its not just the size, its how they are built. GM even knows it as they put the 14 bolt in the H2 which came stock with 35's.

On the other end of the scale is the stock 2.5 liter manual TJ that did the trip.

Kinja'd!!!

( I wish I had photos and videos of our trip up that canyon but the card became corrupted.)

The truth is that our vehicles are already on the big side. Size is an asset or a liability like articulation or lockers. the smaller you go, the less of the other stuff you need. The bigger you go...the more you need. Our trucks are on that breakpoint where 33's inch tires and a single locker will scrape through tight trails without exploding. Get bigger and you need more which starts to limit your access.

Kinja'd!!!

Full sizers have been around and cheap for a LOOOOONG time, its not that their accessibility or affordability is what’ s keeping them from the backcountry like the GX. Like sportsmobiles which I have a ton of love and respect for...people just don’t go some places with a vehicle like that.

As for hells revenge? Its as hard as you want it to be. I’ve met the crown vic guy, he knows his limits.

Im not trying to bag on full sizers or your truck at all. Truthfully. and yes, there is a lot you can do with a mildly modified Tahoe and see a ton of the west. Most of my trips could be done in 2wd. I am saying that I KNOW that even a 2 lift 33 inch tire tahoe is unsuitable for the routes that I take.
